Mittenwald

Last Sunday, when we left Garmisch, we headed out towards a little town called Mittenwald - it was south and east of Garmisch, and known in our guide book as one of the "Most Charming Small Villages" in Germany. It has wonderfully decorated houses with painted facades and ornately carved gables. In the mid-17th century, it was known as "The Village of a Thousand Violins" because the stringed instruments are made here. It sits tucked under some towering Alps, and was indeed a fun place to walk around and then enjoy some coffee and a treat (Apfelstreudel - my favorite!) before driving home.
